When Life Throws a Curveball: Lessons From a Hypnosis Session That Didn’t Go to Plan

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many clients through my signature hypnosis programme, Quiet and Rewrite the Stories in Your Head. Each session is entirely bespoke and shaped around the client’s inner world, their stories, their hopes, the places where their unconscious mind feels most at home.

We always begin with a short discovery call. This is where the real magic starts: exploring the stories they’re ready to release, the patterns they want to shift, and the places that soothe their nervous system.

For some, it’s the soft hush of a sandy beach at sunset. For others, it’s the stillness of falling snow or the comforting creak of an old, character-filled house. We also talk about their hobbies and interests, such as music, movement, creativity or being in the garden, because these threads help me craft a journey their unconscious mind can recognise, trust and most importantly respond to.

When Calm Meets Chaos

Then comes the session itself. Whether in person or online, clients simply arrive, settle and allow their mind to drift into a space where obstacles can be met, understood and gently released. Their confidence grows. Boundaries strengthen. Identity returns after illness. People remember who they are beneath the noise. My role is to guide; their unconscious mind does the rest.

Everything had been flowing beautifully until last night.

The session was booked, the pre call complete, the agreements signed and the bespoke hypnosis journey ready. And then… technology decided otherwise. My client couldn’t hear me. I moved rooms. The laptop froze. I couldn’t reconnect, message or even close the stuck window on my laptop. Nothing. Just a frozen screen and that familiar flicker of frustration rising in my chest.

After a reboot and a flurry of texts, we finally reconnected only to discover that my client had to leave on the hour. No extension possible. So, we rebooked, quickly, kindly and agreed to start fresh another day.

And there it was: the curveball. The unexpected. The moment life reminds us that control is an illusion and flexibility is a skill.

I could have spiralled into self doubt or blame. Instead, I stepped outside with a cup of tea, sat in the last of the sunshine and let my nervous system settle. Because this is the work I teach and the work I live. Regulate. Reset. Return to baseline. Remember that there is no failure, only feedback.`

As the warmth of the sun softened the edges of the day, I felt grateful. Grateful that I get to do work that matters. Grateful for clients who trust me. Grateful for the reminder that even interruptions can be invitations to pause, breathe, and reconnect with what’s real.

“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.” Sun Tzu

And that opportunity, for me, was a quiet moment with a cup of tea, a reminder of why I do what I do, and the certainty that tomorrow brings another chance to make a difference.

Just imagine, for a moment, a life without the noise.

Without the chaos.
Without the constant tug of old stories pulling you away from who you’re becoming.

Imagine waking up with a clear mind, not because life is perfect, it’s because you finally have the inner instruction manual your nervous system has been craving. A way to return to calm. A way to steady yourself. A way to feel like you again.
