Finding Your Recharge Button

“Sometimes your soul just needs a decent cuppa, a strong breeze, and permission to do absolutely nothing.” – Me

This week I had a meeting in Wales and, being firmly landlocked in the Midlands, I decided to take a little detour to the seaside. If you’ve lived in the middle of the country for long enough, you’ll understand the sheer joy of seeing water that isn’t in a glass.

The sunshine was out, the air was warm, and when I dipped my toes into the sea, it was miraculously warm too. I stood there grinning like someone who’s just found an extra biscuit at the bottom of the tin.

There was a strong wind and what seemed like a hundred surfers bobbing around in the waves, waiting for the perfect one. I found a rock and just sat. I watched the sea, the dogs chasing balls they had no intention of returning, and people simply enjoying the moment.

Somewhere between the waves crashing and the wind tangling my hair, I realised how much I needed to hit pause. Just stop worrying about everything for a moment. Close my eyes, listen to the sea, feel the sand under my feet and breathe.

When was the last time you took time out just to be?

This morning, I woke up early to the sound of rain. After a long hot summer, it felt like an old friend tapping on the window. I opened it wide and just listened. Bliss.

Time for yourself doesn’t need to be expensive, dramatic or involve a week in a spa (although I wouldn’t say no). It can be as simple as:

  • Making a cup of tea and refusing to do anything for the five minutes it takes to drink it.
  • Taking a slow walk without turning it into a step-counting competition.
  • Or picking up a journal and letting your unconscious mind spill onto the page. No filter. No “good handwriting or accurate spelling required.” Just you, your thoughts, and maybe a pen that actually works, or you love the colour of.

Life after big change whether it’s cancer, career upheaval, or simply forgetting who you are in the whirlwind of everyone else’s needs isn’t about finding a brand-new version of yourself. It’s about remembering the one who’s been there all along, waiting patiently for you to press your own recharge button.

📓 Journal Prompts:

  1. When was the last time you felt truly present — and what were you doing?
  2. If your “recharge button” had a label, what would it say? (“Press here for calm”, “Insert cake first”, etc.)
  3. What tiny pause could you gift yourself today that would make a big difference?
