A Journey of Volunteering, Strength, and Pink Tutus

The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of emotion, inspiration, and unforgettable experiences as I stepped into the world of volunteering with Breast Cancer Now and Cancer Relief.

Marching forward with Breast Cancer Now

My first volunteering event was a true baptism of fire for those signed up to do either the 10 or 20 mile walk for Breast Cancer Now, with me assisting as a marshal. The organisation was impeccable, and the day started with the perfect motivators: a warm breakfast roll, a steaming cuppa, and my very own bright orange volunteer t-shirt and lanyard (instant official vibes!).

But what truly set the tone for the day was the camaraderie. I was in a team which included two incredible veteran volunteers, both celebrating their 20th year of giving their time to this cause. Their energy and dedication were contagious.

Then came the welcome event. A participant stood up and shared her breast cancer journey, one filled with shock, unexpected diagnoses, surgeries, and treatment decisions. Listening to her story mirrored my own so closely that I got quite emotional and I found myself in tears. She even had the Oncotype DX test, which spared her from chemotherapy, just like mine had. That moment reminded me exactly why volunteering matters.

Running for Cancer Relief’s Race for Life

The following week, I swapped my marshal duties for running shoes (well, it did involve some walking as well, if I’m honest) and joined the Cancer Relief Race For Life run. This time, it was a family affair with my twin sister, a chemotherapy nurse, and my niece, a newly qualified nurse, stood beside me, ready to take on the challenge.

The atmosphere was friendly. A warm-up session had everyone bouncing, moving, and even joining in a Mexican wave. And then – GO. Runners and walkers of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels hit the course, some decked out in pink tutus, bringing fun and flair to an already incredible event.

What made the experience truly unforgettable was the support. Volunteer marshals cheered us on and a choir lined part of the route, lifting our spirits with music as we jogged and walked. I was inspired and emotional when reading the messages on the backs of participants; dedications, tributes, and names of loved ones.

I ran in memory of my beautiful niece Holly, who courageously fought cancer for six years before passing away at the age of 42 last year. She was a shining light in our lives, and being part of this event was my way of keeping her spirit alive.

Gratitude and Looking Forward

These past few weeks have filled me with gratitude for the people I’ve met, the stories I’ve heard, and the generosity of everyone who has donated. Every penny raised will go towards the vital fight against cancer.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s about being part of a community that lifts, supports, and inspires each other. If you’ve ever thought about joining an event, take the leap! You won’t regret it.
