World Cancer Day: A Personal Story of Fear, Healing & Helping Others

As World Cancer Day approaches on 4th February, I wanted to share a little of my own journey, this is not for sympathy, it is just because so many people quietly carry their fears, anxieties, and unspoken worries long after the world thinks they should be “back to normal” and that you “look great” after they have had a cancer diagnosis and completed their treatment.

My Story

My story began in 2022 in a Morrisons car park, of all places, where I attended a routine mammogram. A follow up appointment was required which included scans and biopsies, and one very kindly offer a cup of tea (which rang alarm bells with me as it was offered in the middle of a routine hospital appointment). I then found myself stepping into a world I never dreamed I would enter. The surgery and treatments have been successful, and I’m incredibly grateful to be three years clear. However, like anyone who’s been through cancer knows, the story doesn’t end when the hospital appointments and the treatment do.

People see you looking well and assume life has snapped back into place. They have moved on, so assume you will be doing the same. However, your mind doesn’t always get the memo. The fear, the “what ifs,” become very loud, with a feeling of anxiety just before an annual check up, the logic says you will fine, yet they still linger. Quietly. Persistently. And often invisibly.

My cancer experience completely reshaped the direction of my life. I stepped away from the corporate world and qualified in NLP mindset coaching, hypnotherapy and rapid fear release work. Today, I support both people who feel held back by fear, whether it stems from cancer, past trauma, phobias like flying, medical appointments or heights, or simply from years of being the one who keeps everything going for everyone else.

My work isn’t about endless talking or reliving painful memories, it’s about going to the internal core, the part that drives your decisions, holds your beliefs and memories, all held in your unconscious mind. By working with this part, I can gently guide and release the fears it’s been holding onto, often for far longer than they realise. A single, one off 2 hour session is all that is required. Whether they are someone who has been through cancer themselves, or they have supported a loved one through it, or they are simply carrying fears that have built up suddenly or over time, this approach creates a profound instant shift.

Many people experience meaningful change in just one session, describing a renewed sense of lightness, calm and freedom they haven’t felt in years. They tell me they sleep better, feel more grounded and in control, and stop avoiding things that once filled them with dread. They reconnect with joy, confidence and everyday ease. For those stepping into life after cancer, it often gives them permission to embrace the next chapter with clarity and strength. It’s never about “fixing” anyone; it’s about helping you reclaim the parts of yourself that fear has been sitting on, so they can move forward with more ease and possibility.

World Cancer Day highlights just how many of us have been touched by cancer, whether personally or through someone we know and love. If you’re on that journey, you’re part of a community that understands your strength, courage and resilience. And if you’re supporting someone with cancer, your kindness, patience and steady presence can bring them the comfort, confidence and a sense of safety that makes each day a little brighter and easier to get through, either with or without a cup of tea.
